It would seem that the only reason De Niro was cast as the foil in this movie is because he played the antithesis of this in Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy. Philips is clearly paying homage to that movie throughout Joker, as well as being influenced by another Scorsese classic, Taxi Driver. 100 percent agreed. Joker is well-acted and directed, but I found it a bit hollow too, and certainly no substitute for the Scorsese classics from which it draws such obvious inspiration.
