A bit of theology:

Genesis doesn't specify an apple. Beside the point I know, but I like being beside the point sometimes.

Why put the tree there? Because without free will there can be no true love. And it has been sorted out, in the sense that (in the Christian faith) one can accept Jesus as a once and for all time sacrifice for sin, meaning all can be repent and be saved. 2 Peter 3 verse 9 also talks about God being patient because he wants none to be lost, etc.

All that said, the where-was-God argument is a difficult one to grapple with, even if one is a believer like me (World War II and the Holocaust being a good case in point, and my experiences in cinemas when some inconsiderate cretin uses a phone being another). On the other hand, the Bible prophesies that eventually God steps in and brings justice, partly to judge the one world dicatorship of the Antichrist (Revelation chapter 13) and partly to avoid full-blown (nuclear?) annihilation (otherwise "no flesh would survive", as stated in Matthew 24, with the apparent aftermath of nuclear war also alluded to in Ezekiel 39, for instance).
