A fantastic article with which I wholeheartedly concur. I hugely dislike writers trying to inflict 21st Century morality on historic characters and cultures, for all the reasons you outline here. It is dishonest and often smacks of condescending, sanctimonious virtue-signalling, which takes me right out of any narrative about compelling but flawed humanity, and into the realms of preachy political speechifying.
