A fascinating perspective. I've yet to see The Fabelmans (it opens in the UK in January) but I look forward to it. My instinct tells me Spielberg told the story of his childhood divorce trauma better - albeit heavily disguised under layers of (grounded) fantasy - in E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, which I consider one of the greatest films ever made. But if The Fabelmans is self-indulgence, then I can't think of a director who has earned the right to go there more. Spielberg has given us so much, so if he wants to get this out of his system, I'm not going to begrudge the man. :)
