A fascinating, well-written piece.
As a lifelong Doctor Who fan, I particularly took issue with Mary Whitehouse, another Wertham type figure. She objected to the violence and scariness of the series, despite the fact that as children we absolutely loved it. She torpedoed the golden era of Doctor Who with Tom Baker and Elizabeth Sladen (and later Louise Jameson), under the oversight of the greatest producer the series ever had, Philip Hinchcliffe. It was transparently clear Whitehouse didn't understand the context of stories like, say, The Deadly Assassin (one of the very best).
