A few points to make here.
1) No decade more than the 1990s shows the wild divergence between UK and US pop music scenes. Frankly, ours was miles better.
2) The 1990s may have been a dark time for you (I understand the Springsteen issue would have been tough), but for the Dillon Empire, it was glorious for many reasons: turning 18, going to university, loads of international travel, getting my first proper job, meeting my wife (in 1999, after many other romantic misadventures), and so many great films. The only downside was the absence of Doctor Who.
3) In the spirit of this piece, I'll add a few hugely reductive song choices from the 1990s, again sticking to one slot per artist for the sake of variety. And again, I'm going by UK single release dates, since I've always been more a singles person than an album person.
