A fun to watch but entirely implausible vision of humanity in space. A much more realistic series is the BBC's Blakes 7 (which ran in the late 70s and early 80s). It was made on a miniscule budget with laughable sets and costumes, but the concepts, characters, and plots are brilliant. Essentially it is the anti-Star Trek, showing a human Empire that conquers other planets, oppresses other aliens, steals resources, and so forth. Blake and his crew are criminals on the run.
