A great article. I am the same rare breed (though from the UK). I do not care about sport at all. In fact, I often jokingly (and rather unfairly) refer to "sports personality" as being an oxymoron (there's a "sports personality of the year" award in the UK, I think).
All that said, I did enjoy the documentary Senna - not because I give a crap about motor racing, but because it tells an incredible story about universally relatable themes like faith, rivalry, obsession, and loss. But that's my point in a nutshell. The sport isn't what interests me. The story and the characters are what interest me. Watching a football game or suchlike on TV is like watching a story with no context, because I don't know or give a crap about any of the characters.
