A great essay on one of Scorsese’s most underrated films. I’m a believer and find this film asks a seemingly impossible question: Suffering torture and death as a martyr is one thing, but allowing others to suffer because you won’t go through the motions of recanting… is that what Jesus would do? On the one hand the Bible says God will deny us if we deny him but on the other hand God says he looks at the heart and not the outward appearance. A genuine conundrum and I daresay Christians aren’t all going to have the same answer. I just pray I never face such a scenario.
