After the events of 6th January 2021, I suggested to some of my American friends that the best thing they could do now would be to ignore Trump completely. Don't try and investigate him. Don't try and prosecute him. Institute a media blackout among all media institutions that oppose him and do not give him the oxygen of publicity. Let him disappear into obscurity.
I'm not sure how practical or possible that would have been, but I suspect it would have helped to remove Trump from the American collective consciousness (and by extension, the various odious individuals with whom he associates, such as the subject of this article).
At the same time, I also told said American friends that the best thing the Democrats could do in the next election was to address the real concerns of everyday voters (ie, the cost of living) without getting into divisive identity politics, and to generally put forward their own policies, rather than spend the campaign attacking Trump (or whoever replaced him), and definitely not to wheel out Hollywood celebrities to condescendingly tell them that they must, for their own good, not vote Republican.
Of course, none of that happened, and here we are. As I said to someone else yesterday, I feel like Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park: I hate being right all the time.
