Again, he has never said this. He simply is expressing a frustration for the lack of more incisive, grown-up, thought-provoking films, and a lot of people agree with him. Bear in mind he entered the industry at an unprecedented time of creativity in Hollywood history: The second Hollywood golden age, ie the 1970s.

One thing I would say to Scorsese, as a means of comfort for his frustrations, is that outside mainstream Hollywood, the kind of cinema he craves is alive and well. In Korean cinema, Japanese cinema, European cinema, Scandinavian cinema, British films, the US independent scene, and so forth.
