Again, to reiterate, I didn't find Temple of Doom remotely disturbing as a child (I was 9 when it came out). It had a dark fairy tale edge, and I expect insane levels of cruelty in fairy tales. Viewed through adult eyes, it is a lot more alarming. Temple of Doom was actually a much more straightforward tale of good versus evil than Raiders, in many respects (see the article I linked to in another comment for my commentary on why Indy is a darker character in Raiders).
