All excellent points. My accent has always been BBC English, so I'm walking stereotype for Americans.

I remember visiting Sunderland in the north-east of England once in 1997. I got off the train, tried to get a taxi, and literally couldn't understand a single word the driver was saying. In the end, I had to point to the address on a piece of paper, as I wasn't sure I'd get where I needed otherwise. :)
