All of these sequels are inferior to the originals. Some drastically inferior. But in the cases where they are directed by Spielberg (The Lost World, Temple of Doom), they are very good in their own right, regardless. Superman II is damaged goods, as you point out (I've written elsewhere how my ideal cut would be a cross between both versions) but it is still entertaining and worthwhile.
