An excellent anecdote framed around discussion of probably my favourite film of the 21st Century.

(Spoiler alert - do not read on if you've not seen the film)

I related to the finale so much. Dreyman sees Wiesler, trundling along in his lonely way, undertaking menial work delivering newspapers. He wants to say something, some words of thanks, but realises his words will be empty and useless. So he does exactly what I would have done: wrote a novel and dedicated to him. I have dedicated novels to the most important people in my life, for reasons that are private and personal to those concerned, exactly as Dreyman did. When Wiesler then sees it, and the book shop owner asks him if he wants it gift-wrapped, he simply replies: "No. This is for me." It's one of the most perfect endings I've ever seen, and as a writer, so, so satisfying.
