An excellent piece. If Griffith is taught in film school (which I support, provided his insidious racism is fully exposed and discussed), then it's vitally important to also teach about Micheaux, given how ahead of his time he was. Within Our Gates is vital counter programming to The Birth of a Nation, and film students need to understand that even back in 1915, the message of the latter was rightly greeted with outrage, regardless of Griffith's technical prowess (not just by Micheaux).
