An irrelevant aside: My existence relies on both the rise and fall of Nazi Germany. If my grandmother (who was Jewish) hadn't been persecuted to the point that she had to flee to England, she never would have met my grandfather. On the other hand, if Hitler had won the war and conquered England, she'd have been exterminated along with the rest of the Jews.
