Another crucial point. I despair of religious leaders that claim they have the absolute truth about matters that are entirely open to debate/interpretation. Whether its about booze, violent movies, short skirts, pop music, etc... The everything-fun-is-wrong brigade really know how to exert control. But I believe it is wrong to make a doctrine out of any personal revelation that can't be supported in black and white in the Bible. The things that need to be clear are clear - though shalt not steal, kill, commit adultery, etc. Those that aren't are deliberately vague, so we have to pursue a personal relationship with God. God might tell an alcoholic not to drink, but he isn't going to say the same thing to me. So for a preacher to say all drinking alcohol is wrong is an abuse of power.
Another example: I love the horror genre, and indeed have had horror novels published. I know it's not for everyone, but I have had so much grief over the years from hot-under-the-dog-collar evangelicals that think the genre is ungodly and that I am in sin for writing within it. I have written a number of rebuttals to this. Here, here, and here, for instance.
