Another day, another profound disagreement with Valentina Eve. ;)

Firstly, I must acknowledge that this is well-written and well-argued, even if I take issue with much of it.

Personally, I loved Wonka. I thought it was wonderful escapism. I don't understand why some people are snooty about Timothee Chalamet, who sings and dances to tremendous effect here. I accept that a certain nostalgia is inherent in this film for people my age (as we grew up with Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory from 1971, starring Gene Wilder, to which this is clearly linked). And I also accept that Paul King's two Paddington films are superior to this, but then, that is a very high bar. Wonka gets within respectable distance of it, to my mind, not least because the songs are good (Scrub Scrub, You've Never Had Chocolate Like This, etc) and because Hugh Grant is hilarious, stealing every scene he is in.

So in my case, no begging was neccesary to love this film. I found it funny and touching, and can understand why it has done so well. :)
