As a Christian of no fixed denomination, I don't believe in the observance of a calendar as a means of prayer and fasting. My own position has always been fast/pray if I feel specifically led by God (and I have on occasion, with surprising results), but just doing it because its that time of year seems unnecessary.

As for your mother, I wish you all the very best in your courageous honesty. :)
