As someone very happily married, and also rather lacking in social graces, even I know it's unbelievably obnoxious to cattle-prod single people on this issue. Firstly, it is nobodys business but theirs. Secondly, no one should lower their standards. Ever.

Before I was married, I was told my standards were insanely high, and that no one would ever be good enough for me. Wrong on all counts, but I've never forgotten how irritating it was to be harangued by these nitwits (often, as you correctly point out, unhappily married themselves, and constantly sniping at one another).
