Because what they replaced it with was indifferent at best, the film is rightly castigated. However, some rare films abandon source material, but what they replace it with is so wonderful it doesn't matter (example: The Iron Man by Ted Hughes, which was adapted as The Iron Giant - the only similarity between book and film is the bit where the giant eats scrap metal, plus the pacifist undertone).
