Can I boldly suggest a few more exceptions, for your consideration:
1. Psycho (which pretty much invented the slasher genre).
2. Peeping Tom (which pretty much invented it the same year, only British audiences were so scandalised the film was censored into oblivion and buried until years later, when censored footage was restored and a major critical reappraisal took place).
3. Halloween (almost as influential as Psycho).
4. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (Dario Argento's deftly atmospheric giallo masterpiece).
5. Dressed to Kill (early Brian De Palma at his most stylish and twisted).
6. Freaky (a recent one involving a body swap that I found outrageously entertaining and I reckon you will too).
