Completely agreed re: westerns. Also The Wizard of Oz, Flash Gordon (also fantasy rather than sci-fi), samurai films, Arthurian legends, Greek mythology, various biblical texts, The Lord of the Rings, etc. Sci-fi doesn't really inform Star Wars much at all.
