Completely agreed. Visual effects should always serve the story (example: Back to the Future).

…the Story First Principle. A great movie — superhero or otherwise — starts with a strong narrative. Special effects should serve the story by enhancing the visual elements, not cover up or stitch together its gaping flaws since even the best graphics cannot fill a plot hole.
