Did Peter Jackson use AI? I know he used computers, which is different (I'm not completely anti-computer enhancements, provided they are guided by human hands and used sparingly and selectively). They Shall Not Grow Old is the one exception to my principle about never colourising film, for all reasons I discuss in this piece (see link below). But otherwise, I am completely against it.
As for your thought experiment, I don't care if it is the Mona Lisa or Jaws 3D (or True Lies, for that matter). The original is what it is and should be respected. Artistic value judgements are neither here nor there.
I don't believe AI has any value at all, to be honest. I think it is the thin end of the wedge, and is going to wreak havoc if we don't rein it in, especially given the dollar signs in the eyes of greedy corporations and the potential wreckage to creative careers.
If people want AI to do something useful, they should programme it with the world's greatest scientific minds, and device a cure for cancer or Alzheimer's. Otherwise, frankly, it can f*** right off.
