My monthly delve into the darkness of Medium, searching for favourite articles.
You’re probably expecting this month’s Dillon Picks to open with a pompous statement of the kind Reginald the Rigorous makes when filling in for His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Simon Dillon. Something like: “With Reginald the Rigorous on annual leave, I, Millicent the Malevolent, Archivist of the Dillon Empire, am hereby undertaking the monthly selection of those Medium articles given the Imperial seal of approval”. Instead, I’m going to simply say, these are my favourite articles from Medium that I read over the last month. Mine. Not Reginald’s. Not even the Emperor’s. Mine.
Yes, my position in the Dillon Empire means my selection carries weight, and I get that I am representing Imperial interests, but Reginald overthinks this. What’s more, he’s far too keen on sneaking in snide, passive-aggressive remarks implying the Emperor should pay more attention to this task, and less planning conquests. Frankly, what’s a maniacal dictator for if not planning conquests? Besides, I believe the Dillon regime is one of benevolence and liberation; a global quest to stamp out mobile phone usage in cinemas, for one thing (laws will be passed to that effect in all conquered territories).
