With 2023 well into its final act, once again the Dillon Empire brings before you a selection of fine writing from Medium. The ever-vigilant Imperial eye has scoured the breadth and depth of the realm, executing holy vengeance upon AI-written articles, plagues of scam WhatsApp comments, articles using the word “content” when referring to films, and any foolish endorsement of streaming over cinema and physical media. At times, it can be a hellscape out there.

Yet amid the barren wastes of performative narcissism, there can be found creative voices in the wilderness; writers whose eloquent outpourings cry out for inclusion in the annals of the Dillon Empire. To that end, it is my sincere hope that the ten authors represented herein savour the nourishment of this hallowed Imperial endorsement. May it be like water that causes growth to the flower of your writing endeavours.

By now, my criteria should be familiar: No usage of AI in any way, shape, or form. No positive reference to AI in any way, shape, or form. No earnings bragging, hustle porn, vacuous trend-chasing, we’re-all-doomed apocalypse porn, professionally offended blithering, sweeping statement clickbait, blanket tirades against entire people groups, and ill-informed advice from those with no…
