"Dune is artless and weirdly awful while most of Lynch's work is artfully awfully weird. " A superb summary. However, I can't agree with you on Dances with Wolves. For me that works where Avatar doesn't because it is a good story well told, with a surprising amount of humour (a spoonful of humour always helps the White Man's Burden medicine go down). Plus it has gorgeous cinemagraphy (South Dakota looking fabulous without a single CGI pixel), winning performances, a fabulous John Barry score, and for me at any rate, it tugs all the appropriate heartstrings. Is it above criticism? Not necessarily, but find it a far more engaging, far less condescending film than Avatar, and therefore am inclined to be a lot more generous towards it. As a piece of big, beautiful cinema, I find it rather wonderful.
