Even in sci-fi/fantasy, it needs to be done in service of the plot. :)

I’m not the first person to say this, and I won’t be the last. Take it to heart. Some genres — like fantasy and sci-fi — have more tolerance for world-building-focused backstory and/or prologues, but in the broad scheme of things, it is something to avoid with character-building.
