Every word of this is indeed blasphemy, but I do like the first Pirates of the Caribbean film. The writing isn't better though. The film is too long, and there's a point about an hour in when everyone could get what they wanted if they just stopped trying to kill each other. But Johnny Depp's performance carries it and it is highly amusing (the less said about the sequels the better).

I also take issue with your assertion that my evaluation of Raiders is in part nostalgia based. I can assure you it isn't. I do take very seriously the difference between "favourite" and "greatest". As another example, I saw Back to the Future and The Goonies around the same time at the cinema (in late 1985), when I was ten. I thoroughly enjoyed both, and have nostalgia for both. But I can objectively see The Goonies is far from a great film, whereas I'd argue Back to the Future is a great film.
