…oker persona is so destructive, but it is also brilliant and audacious outside of the film itself — it is a disavowal of the response to the first film, a clear, powerful statement from Phillips about how Joker (2019) was misconstrued (or, perhaps, how that film misstepped in its portrayal of the Joker as a sympathetic character). Folie à Deux views the Joker with abundantly obvious disdain, and because of that it is also directly challenging those who admired the first film and who chose to adopt it as a political piece which mirrored their own ideas surrounding violence due to political or personal unrest (mainly from lonely, young white men).
