Exactly why I was, er, strongly encouraged to take voluntary redundancy when the company I worked for was downsized last year. I had worked there for 23 years, but new American bosses took over for complicated reasons and... well, did what Americans always seem to do to UK companies (look at Cadbury as an example and you'll understand my point).
