Excellent article.

Personally, I pinball between this and LA Confidential as deserving of winning Best Picture that year. But it probably should have been this. Yes, Cameron's film is a bit of a blunt instrument and the romance is one-dimensional, but it's a very effective blunt instrument, and the romance definitely tugs heartstrings in an appropriately melodramatic way. It is trendy to scoff at Titanic, but I refuse to. Even if it is a film conceived of raw ambition, it's a fine artistic achievement with satisfying disaster movie spectacle to spare (it must be seen at a cinema on a huge screen to be properly appreciated). Is it the best film about the Titanic? No, that's still A Night to Remember. But it's still a damn good one. :)
