Excellent article. As someone who adores gothic fiction (both reading it and writing it), I particularly enjoyed your observations on third party accounts of complex characters (something inherent in other gothic classics like Wuthering Heights), as well as your point on withholding a character's name.

I also completely agree with your assessment of the twist in Rebecca - one of my all-time favourite big reveals. It is exceptionally well crafted, and cleverly foreshadowed.

Rebecca also casts a long shadow over many of my own gothic mystery novels, especially The Birds Began to Sing.

Anyway, thank you for sharing this.

By the way, I prefer the Hitchcock film of this to Ben Wheatley's by some distance. Have you seen that version?
