Farewell My Concubine was very much in the cineaste conversation during the original run here in the UK. Barry Norman raved about it, as did many other critics, and it was a key film in an exceptional Awards season (it was nominated for Best International Film at the Oscars). This was the same year the likes of Shadowlands, Short Cuts, Schindler's List, The Remains of the Day, The Piano, A Bronx Tale, The Age of Innocence, Carlito's Way, What's Love Got to Do With It, Philadelphia, In the Name of the Father, Fearless, and various others were sending me back from the cinema absolutely blown away, often moved to tears, night after night, astonished at what films could do. UK cinemas in late 1993/early 1994 were absolutely stuffed with brilliance. Farewell My Concubine was another one rubbing shoulders with that crowd.
It may have been mostly forgotten now (except by the likes of me), but I don't think it has a cult following.
So yes - go with Hard Boiled instead.
