Film Review — Captain America Brave New World
With a big reveal ruined by marketers, the latest Marvel adventure is unremarkable but hardly a disaster

For the second time this month, I find myself irked by the arrogance of a marketing department that insists it knows best. I refer, of course, to a major plot turn towards the finale of Captain America: Brave New World spoiled by that film’s second trailer. Were this film not a run-of-the-mill slab of corporate product my level of fury would be significantly elevated. As it stands, I’m only moderately fed up. Still, I wish someone would slap those marketing nitwits with a wet kipper. Occasionally, we, the audience, like to be surprised. It would have been entirely possible to sell this film without rubbing our noses in spoilers.
Unlike the aforementioned marketers, I’ll keep clear of spoilers in this review. Mind you, with all the Marvel backstory Brave New World assumes you’re aware of, perhaps it won’t matter either way. There was a time when these films were carefully constructed to stand alone. However, that strategy was inevitably abandoned as the Marvel universe expanded. It wasn’t so bad when we just had the films to keep up with, but now, there’s also an interminable amount of spin-off television to take into consideration, most of it only available on Disney’s…
