First of all I love Galaxy Quest: It manages to be a clever Star Trek spoof, an affectionate send-up of fandom, and a satisfying science fiction adventure in it's own right (better than some of the Star Trek films it spoofs).

Secondly, I also saw this in the cinema during the original run, and I completely concur with what you are saying about clever use of aspect ratio. A few films have made good use of aspect ratio switching: Galaxy Quest, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Cold Fever, Oz the Great and Powerful, and JFK all leap to mind immediately, but there are some other great examples too.
