Firstly, your daughter's compassion and concern is laudible. My remarks in this article are absolutely not directed at 12 year olds. I'm sure you didn't think they were, but I wanted to make that clear, just in case anyone reading this thinks otherwise.
I still maintain that Barbie is primarily a film for nostalgic female adults, or people like me who are indifferent to Barbie, having no personal baggage attached, but who enjoy the comedy and satire nonetheless. I can imagine children (who will inevitably see this) may have a slightly different take, and as such, I can understand why some of what the film references may have gone over your daughter's head, perhaps not having had lived experience of some of the things satirised.
I am most curious to hear your opinion once you've seen it. :)
