For me, "goth" culture is more tied into the 1980s with bands like Sisters of Mercy and The Cure. There are also echoes of this in 90s films such as Bram Stoker's Dracula and The Crow, but I never thought of The Matrix that way. "Grunge" seemed a rather different subculture.

Still, such definition wrangling aside, I agree about Akira and Snow Crash. I can't comment on video games as I know nothing about them.
