From an orthodox theological point of view, what happens at the end isn't that radical, considering (I'm trying to skirt around spoilers here by being vague) the eschewing of a certain option that could have taken by the individual in question who becomes Pope. He simply leaves God's handiwork as it is, so to speak. That's actually a conservative point of view, if you think about it.
