Funny you should mention Near Dark. I rewatched that recently and it is superb. The same can't be said for The Lost Boys. It looks a lot less impressive now (despite the 80s nostalgia, which I share) and doesn't really catch fire until the finale, which I do enjoy. ("Death by stereo!") :)
As for Douglas, I like him as an actor, but I think he does smarmy rather well, in everything from Coma (a nail-biting all-time favourite - do give it a watch if you've never seen it) to Wall Street and Fatal Attraction. But yes, here he is particularly outstanding. He's also very good in The Game, which I also rewatched recently. Despite being preposterous, I rather like that one too.
