Gaby, this is a brilliant essay, full of characteristic self-aware maturity, wisdom, and insight. I found much of it deeply relatable. Based on what you write here, I can fully understand why you reached the conclusions you reached. I think I would have done the same. The difference with me is, my parents did acknowledge what they did, apologised unreservedly, and that made things a lot easier.
