Give me "proper food" over upmarket, pretentious "haute cuisine" any day. I also have a theory that food never tastes as good when served on square plates.

Actually, that reminds me... My late father-in-law loved a pub in your neck of the woods called the Cooper Arms, which had a sign outside saying "Proper Food". They did some of the finest Sunday roasts I've ever encountered (not sure if they still do, as this was some years ago). Of course, the finest are those cooked by me or my wife (just stating facts - I learned much from her culinary genius, which she in turn learned from her father).
