Good article. Fifty Shades of Grey is written by (and often enjoyed by) people who have no idea about BDSM dynamics, and it greatly irritates me. For an interesting film on that subject, try Secretary, Belle de Jour, or The Duke of Burgundy.
I'm also have an (arguably irrational) hatred for the Twiglet franchise (as I call it), partly for the reasons you describe. I remember seeing a trailer for one of the films at the cinema (I think it was Breaking Wind part 1), and my then very young son was with me. He asked me "Daddy what's that?" I replied: "I'll tell you what it's not. It's not a vampire film." My preferred vampire films: Nosferatu, Dracula (the 1958 Hammer one), Martin, Near Dark, Let the Right One In.
On the other hand, I do love Harry Potter, but you're right about Snape. I couldn't understand why he didn't brew himself a get-over-it potion. But it provides useful motivation, and he is my favourite character in the story, as he is complex and fascinating, painted much more in shades of grey.
Nice A-ha reference by the way. Great track. :)
