Good article. Regarding the notion that adverbs are the work of the devil, I think it all depends on context. Yes, sometimes finding a more descriptive verb works better, but there are times when an adverb adds genuinely needed clarity. For example, "smiled happily" works just as well with "happily" deleted, but "smiled cruelly" adds a very different spin on things.
