Great article.
My personal opinion: Everything that is left vague and ambiguous in the Bible, God has allowed it to be that way because the answer may vary from person to person. That's why legalistic attempts at making doctrines out of personal revelation are doomed to failure. God is interested in relationships with people, and that requires a lot more time and effort than simply following a rulebook (hence why Christians often default to legalism).
Example: If you're an alcoholic, probably best to avoid booze. But that isn't true for everyone. Another example: Horror films aren't for everyone, but I have spent my life defying sanctimonious, God-bothering legalists who insist God's taste in film excludes the horror genre (something like this is invariably my response). :)
