Great piece. Some thoughts on this:
1) Avengers Endgame was great in the cinema - a proper "event movie" I quite agree, very much akin to today's generation what the original Star Wars trilogy was to my generation.
2) I think simultaneous release is a horrible idea which could compromise cinema in all kinds of ways. For example, good word of mouth on a film means more casual audiences will make the effort to see it, which means more business. Those determined to watch at home would have done so anyway, but it is these "floating voters" whose business could be lost. Of course, hard core old-school cineastes like me will always make the effort to see films in the cinema, but our ticket sales alone won't be enough to ensure, say, the second part of Dune is made.
People seeing it at the cinema may then chose to buy a download, or pick up a DVD or Blu Ray (I do the latter as I insist on physical media).
3) Here's why for me the cinema experience will always be superior. :)
