I also love idea-based science fiction, but I maintain trying to turn Star Trek into 2001 was a mistake. Whilst Kubrick's masterpiece, Blade Runner, and various others do offer interesting meditations of the kind you describe, I don't think this film does. It's a bit of a lead balloon, albeit a visually impressive one with a great score.

The Wrath of Khan is vastly more entertaining in my opinion, defaulting to the Hornblower-in-space template offered by original series episodes such as Balance of Terror. :)
