Have you seen the other versions of A Star is Born? This one is rather different in terms of how it portrays the downward spiral - he isn't so much jealous (unlike James Mason in the 1954 film) but desperately damaged through years of childhood trauma and addiction. I think the relationship is compassionate, humane - with plenty of flaws, yes - but I don't think it is idealised and held-up as something to aspire to, per se, though it is certainly very moving. In short, I thought it was an excellent film, and is actually my favourite out of all four versions of this story. You can read my original review from the time of the cinema release here, if you're interested. :)
